KEEP IN MIND on this great solemnity of Pentecost that Jesus sends from God His Father the gift of the Holy Spirit to teach us everything and remind us of all that Jesus told us (Jn14:26). Drawing upon the reflections of St. Leo the Great (Pope from 440-461) we pray: Come, Holy Spirit. Do not let my faith fail. Make me strong and bold in following Christ. Come, Holy Spirit. Keep my hope alive for eternal life. Do not let me become discouraged by all the vicissitudes of life. Come, Holy Spirit. Do not let love in my heart grow cold. Let your love burn within my whole being.
In our secularized world it is so easy to get lost in the materialism around us and to neglect the spiritual dimension of our human existence. We need the gift of the Holy Spirit to teach us how to live our daily lives in this world in our own particular circumstances. At the same time the Holy Spirit keeps our eyes fixed on Christ and the vision of eternal life in the world to come. We need the Holy Spirit to bring to our easily distracted minds the teachings of Jesus. Come, Holy Spirit, teach us the things of God. Show us the way of God. Give us the courage and strength to live in the way of God. Empower us to love God with all our hearts and to love one another as Jesus loved us.
